The Owen Wister Review is an annual publication produced by undergraduate students at the University of Wyoming through the Student Media department. We adhere to no specific theme or focus regarding the work submitted. Contributors receive two issues of the journal in which their work appears.
Submission Guidelines
We are now accepting submissions online through Submishmash. Keep reading for the link.
- We accept unpublished manuscripts in creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and art, and endeavor to publish work by both established and emerging writers.
- Our reading period is from September 1 through January 15.
- You may submit in multiple genres, but please do not exceed the submission limits delineated below.
- You may submit one prose piece (3,500 words or less), in either creative nonfiction or fiction. If you prefer we do a “blind” reading, do not include your name in the manuscript.
- You may submit two poems, up to three double-spaced pages each. Please number each page. If you prefer a “blind” reading, do not include your name in the manuscript.
- You may submit up to four pieces of art, which includes, but is not limited to, sculpture, sketches, photography, painting, and graphic designs. Art should be submitted at a printable quality, typically 300dpi or higher. All art submissions will be considered for the forthcoming OWR cover.
- We accept pieces you have recently submitted for consideration elsewhere, but please indicate in the cover letter that you are submitting simultaneously and do notify us promptly if the manuscript is accepted for another publication. Reporting time is generally one to three months.
- For longer prose submissions (3,500+ words), novel excerpts, or general questions please send a query letter to owr@uwyo.edu.
Formatting Guidelines
- Please double-space prose submissions. Page numbers and author’s last name on a submission can help; if you prefer a “blind” reading, do not include your name within the manuscript itself. The online selection committee cannot see who submitted.
- Address submissions to the specific genre. Cover letters should include author’s name, address, phone number, and e-mail address.
- If you are submitting poems, please group them into one document. Do not submit each poem separately.
Our address, for any other questions or for snail-mail submissions (please make them single-sided, double-spaced; include SASE and cover letter; follow all other guidelines above):

Otherwise, we prefer that you submit online:

As I understand it from the email I received, the online submissions will be the preferred method, and become available–through this website– in a week or so (to all genres as well as for locally based authors/artists as well as international submissions) Right? So I should just standby for those guidelines and the link to submit there, generally speaking…

Online submission capabilities will be available very shortly. I’ll be updating the website this weekend, including the submission guidelines, and figuring out the submission manager as well. Just keep checking back. I’ll post a brief announcement about it on the home page. Thanks for your interest, Aaron. Looking forward to reading your work.

Thank you for changing your submissions guidelines so that you accept simultaneous submissions! A very writer-friendly thing to do!

No problem, Tamara. We hope you enjoy the online format! SubmishMash has a very handy “withdraw” option for authors, so it’s easy to let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere.
Thanks,
The editors @ OWR
What should be included in the cover letter for online submissions?
Great question, Oscar. The cover letter for online submissions should contain your first and last name, a short bio (3-4 sentences; you can include any previous publications if you wish) and your contact information (e-mail, phone, address, etc.). Any other information you would like to include, such as notes about the piece/s submitted, is optional.
Thanks again and good luck!

Deadline for art submissions??
The deadline for art submissions this year is January 30.
Thanks for asking!
