Submission Guidelines for Print Year 2022-2023

The Owen Wister Review (OWR) is an annual art and literature journal published every Spring by the University of Wyoming. We aim to produce a high-quality publication by accepting excellent submissions and by working with writers and artists whose submissions are promising but which do not initially meet our standards. The OWR is a platform for emerging authors and artists both within and outside the University of Wyoming community. We will consider every submission on the basis of quality and not discriminate on content or subject matter alone. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee of volunteers before final acceptance is decided by the OWR editor. All submissions, regardless of media, must be unpublished, original works and may not be simultaneously submitted elsewhere. We prefer you submit online through Submittable but they may be made by mail.

Submissions made by mail must be sent to:

Owen Wister Review

University of Wyoming

Dept. 3625

1000 E. University Ave.

Laramie, WY 82071

All submissions must contain a cover letter that includes the contributor’s name, address, phone, email, title(s) of work, and a short biographical note. All submissions must be received by January 31, 2023.

Prose: Printed submissions should be on standard (8½” by 11”) white paper. There is no minimum word count. The maximum word count should not exceed 5,000 words. Please follow standard MLA guidelines when applicable.

Poetry: Please do not submit more than three poems per page of standard (8½” by 11”) white paper. The total word count for a poem or poems should not exceed 5,000 words.

Art/Photography: Submissions may be made via 35 mm slides or sent in digitally. Please do not send in original slides; digital files should not exceed 25 MB per file. Files must be in JPEG format and have a dpi of 300 or higher. Please title all works of art and include any applicable details (e.g. size, medium, technique, camera model, etc.).

We will only consider the first 3 submissions received, in each category, from each contributor. Contributors are welcome to submit work in multiple categories. Any contributor who has one or more piece selected to appear in the OWR will receive two free copies and a twenty-five percent discount on any additional copies.

All publication rights revert back to contributors upon the printing of the OWR.

Anyone interested in volunteering to be part of a review committee should send an email to OWR@uwyo.edu that includes their name, reasons and qualification for participation, and which type(s) of submissions they would like to review.

Thank you!

We look forward to reading your submissions!

  1. As I understand it from the email I received, the online submissions will be the preferred method, and become available–through this website– in a week or so (to all genres as well as for locally based authors/artists as well as international submissions) Right? So I should just standby for those guidelines and the link to submit there, generally speaking…

    1. Online submission capabilities will be available very shortly. I’ll be updating the website this weekend, including the submission guidelines, and figuring out the submission manager as well. Just keep checking back. I’ll post a brief announcement about it on the home page. Thanks for your interest, Aaron. Looking forward to reading your work.

    1. No problem, Tamara. We hope you enjoy the online format! SubmishMash has a very handy “withdraw” option for authors, so it’s easy to let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere.
      Thanks,
      The editors @ OWR

    1. Great question, Oscar. The cover letter for online submissions should contain your first and last name, a short bio (3-4 sentences; you can include any previous publications if you wish) and your contact information (e-mail, phone, address, etc.). Any other information you would like to include, such as notes about the piece/s submitted, is optional.
      Thanks again and good luck!
      The Editors @ OWR
